If you registered late, or the email got spam-blocked, you might not have received our big informational email. So here it is for your edification:
Hello Northern Voice Attendees!
We're super-psyched for Northern Voice 3.0! It's going to be bigger than ever, with 300 attendees and events over three days! And by the time you read this, the conference will have sold out for the third year in a row.
This email provides a quick update and late-breaking details about Northern Voice. Of course, for up to the minute info, visit the conference website.
The Schedule
We’ll be following the same format as previous years, with a new Thursday night reception:
- Thursday evening, 7:00pm, February 22 - Opening night party at Heritage Hall--here's a map. There will be great food for everybody, and Lee LeFever will be talking about how he blogged and podcasted his year-long trip around the world. Admission is free,
but we need to know if you're coming.(UPDATE: Thursday dinner signups are closed; we are at max capacity of 150 for the dinner)- Friday, February 23 - An unconference nicknamed Moose Camp
- Saturday, February 24 - A keynote by Anil Dash, followed by more traditional talks and panels
For the complete schedule, visit the Northern Voice website. We'll also be distributing a paper schedule at the event.
Getting to the Conference
This year we'll be at the beautiful UBC Forestry Sciences Centre (some photos, some more photos) on the University of British Columbia’s main campus. It's about 30 minutes west of downtown Vancouver. Here's a map of UBC with the building marked, and the building's location on Google Maps.
How can you get to UBC?
- Drive. The lot closest to the Forestry Sciences Centre is B4, and apparently costs $4.25/day. There are also parkades, which cost $12/day. If you are driving, visit our ride-sharing page to see if anybody needs a lift.
- Take the bus. Here are instructions, complete with easy to use hockey metaphors.
- Get a ride via our ride-sharing page.
- Share a taxi via our ride-sharing page.
- Bicycle. The Forestry Sciences building has bike racks and public showers. For more information on cycling to UBC, check out this page.
We looked at getting a bus or shuttle, but the cost would have required riders to pay. For roughly the same cost, you can share a cab to the conference.
Some of the organizers work at UBC, and they get lost out there occasionally, so leave a few extra minutes to find your way to the building. We'll also be positioning some brave volunteers in purple shirts outside the building to help you find your way. There may even be some purple balloons.
Registration Opens at 8:30 AM
You can sign in to receive your badge as of 8:30 AM on either morning, as well as at the Thursday night party. Opening remarks are at 9:15 AM. If you're an early riser, please try to arrive closer to 8:30 AM, as this will save us from trying to process 300 people between 9:10 and 9:15 AM.
Lunch (There's No Such Thing...)
We're providing coffee and tea for the coffee breaks, but you're on your own for lunch. You may wish to brown bag it on Saturday, as only some of the on-campus restaurants are open. Also, we've left an hour and a half for lunch, should you want to sneak off campus into Point Grey Village (roughly 10th and Sassamat St).
Planet Northern Voice
We're creating an aggregator which--if you provided them when you registered--will display recent blog posts from all the attendees. We're putting the final touches on it over the weekend, but you can check it out at http://planet.northernvoice.ca.
Tags Du Jour
Of course, you can tag your blog posts and Flickr photos anything you like (it's a folksonomy, dude), but here are the tags we recommend you use. If you don't know what we're talking about, don't worry, you will by Saturday evening:
Technorati tag: northernvoice
Flickr tags: nv07, northernvoice
Sponsors
We’d be nowhere without all our great sponsors. This year, they are:
We're also pleased to announce that PEER ONE NETWORK is sponsoring our Thursday night opening reception. Thanks to all of our sponsors for their participation in this year's conference--you make all the difference.
